I grew up surrounded by the belief that nature was created. That it was created primarily for man to use and dominate, a kind of "manifest destiny" for the whole planet. When I was young, it didn't occur to me to question such an entitlement. Instead I questioned myself, and nature.
It took a lifetime to see that my early fascination with magical places, where the spirit of nature and the spirit of man interact with mutual reverence, was more than childish sentimentality. I finally recognized it as child-like wisdom, an unpolluted trace of the still, small voice of "all that is." [More..]

This album is dedicated to my wife, Bonnie, and my sons, Kendall and Kevin - with thanks for letting me share my love with my students all these years - and to all teachers and caregivers who truly love children as fully-human beings, not untouchable icons of purity and innocence.
Like so many teacher - composers before me, I wrote many didactic little pieces for young students. I tried to capture a bit of each student's personality, while helping him or her with a particular pianistic problem. I didn't appreciate the "depth" of any of the pieces until years later when other students seemed to enjoy playing them, and until the students for whom they were written (now adults) spoke so warmly of them. ENCHANTMENT: THREE MEDITATIONS FOR TWO PIANOS was written for pianist Lawrence Blind to celebrate the birth of his twins, Alexandra and William. Larry was my accompanist when I directed the Albuquerque Boy Choir. When I retired from the choir, his first child was “on the way,” so I wrote “Going Forth at Dawn with Power” to thank him for his years of service to the choir and to celebrate Wesley’s birth. I chose the title of the two-piano piece to reflect the enchantment Larry felt with his babies, and that I felt with nature at “Annacarla.” [More..]
